In February 2021, Nine Entertainment, a major Australian media company, agreed to a deal to license its news content to Google. [86, 88] The Sydney Morning Herald, owned by Nine, reported the value to be more than A$30 million per year over five years. [88, 89] The formal agreement, which also included Facebook, was confirmed by Nine in a statement on June 1, 2021, though financial terms were not officially disclosed in that announcement. [93] The deal was a direct result of Australia's impending News Media Bargaining Code, which compelled digital platforms to pay for journalism. [86]
